In The Woods — A Study in Timeless Living
After three years in the making, we are so pleased to finally share In The Woods. A project that has quietly held a special place with us since its earliest days. Designed to evolve gracefully over time, this home reflects a shared appreciation for craftsmanship, character, and the kind of beauty that only deepens with age. This home was designed with gathering and hosting at the forefront, ensuring each space welcomes intuitive connection and envokes moments of shared experiences.
In The Woods is a home shaped by appreciation for craftsmanship, for character, and for the quiet beauty of things that endure. Our lovely client is an avid collector of vintage pieces, and her love for objects with history became a guiding thread throughout the design. Nowhere is this more evident than in the kitchen’s plate rack, a detail of her own design that reflects both her personal style and her appreciation for forms that have proven their lasting charm. It is a space that honours what came before, while feeling entirely at home in the present.
The palette is grounded and textural: layered wood tones, soft plaster finishes, and natural stone countertops detailed with intricate edge profiles that reward a closer look. These elements work in harmony to create warmth and depth, lending the home a sense of quiet richness rather than overt statement.
While this project began over three years ago, the spaces remain remarkably current as a testament to our studio’s belief in timeless design. Every element was selected with longevity in mind, resulting in interiors that feel just as relevant today as when they were first imagined, and entirely aligned with what we would design now.
This was a renovation rooted in preservation. Rather than erasing the home’s original character, we sought to reveal and elevate it, using new design interventions to highlight the qualities that were already there. Sight-lines and natural light became central to how we re-worked the floor plan, improving flow from kitchen to pantry, opening views through the dining area to the backyard and windows beyond, and allowing the living spaces to feel more connected, open, and serene.
At the heart of the kitchen sits a custom island, designed specifically for this home and its new layout. Extending the full length of the space, it feels both generous and intentional, becoming a focal point that anchors the room without demanding attention. By choosing to omit island pendants, we allowed the architecture and materiality to take precedence, while the skylight above floods the space with natural light, illuminating the subtle details that make this kitchen quietly extraordinary.
In The Woods is a reflection of what we value most: thoughtful restraint, enduring materials, and design that grows more beautiful with time.
